You will never know anyone until you ask them where they come from. We are born from our surroundings – the people, culture and locations that we come from influence every part of our being. I grew up in the Seattle area, I bleed ocean and snow capped mountains. I love where I come from, exploring the other coast hasn’t changed that. I still love my Starbucks and Seahawks.
My trip began with a restless feeling that I got after graduation. I was anxious to begin the next chapter of my story. Even though I love living in Seattle, I was ready to explore new place. I tried not to wish away my summer in anticipation for my next chapter, but I bought a one way ticket to New York, excited to take my time exploring the east coast.
I have been New York for the last 2 weeks. I’ve explored the city, Ellis Island, and a few small towns up north with my cousins Kayla and Michelle. They both live here year round so they were great at showing me little local treasures.
I liked being in the city, but I loved the historic charm of the small towns that I visited.

On a side note, I’ve been trying to learn more than just about the people and places. As an ecologist, not knowing any of the plants in this region was bothering me. I thought it was only polite that I learned their names!
