Last January I was interning on a raw milk dairy, living in a tiny house, and to be honest I had never felt so alone. I remember New Year’s Eve. Falling asleep before midnight. The first time ever. I had always loved staying up late dreaming up New Year’s resolutions. But I was exhausted, lonely, and uninspired. With a few tears I fell asleep. Only to be woken up just before midnight to see fireworks across the field. I saw the change in year after all. Brought in by far off fireworks (another thing I had always enjoyed).

Perhaps it was the lonely start that gave me strength. This year turned out to be different than I had ever expected. However, I was not completely alone, I had recently made a new friend. Another newcomer in town. On January 2nd we were off on a snowshoeing adventure, where she introduced me to some of her childhood friends. We started the year off creating our own adventures.

During my last two months at the dairy, I finally started to explore the small town around me, with Lydia’s company. We found a coffee shop on the water we went to almost every week. Hiked around the state park a handful of times. We encouraged each other as we made up our own challenges. Like a month with out Netflix or learning to headstand. The friends that are with you through times of change are the ones you remember the most.
Ultimately the love of trying new things and monthly challenges influenced my year the most. As my internship came to a close I began participating in yoga challenges. I had no idea how many there were, or that they even existed until I jumped feet first into them.
My January goal is to stay active. These winter days may have few hours of daylight, but the light and energy created from practicing a healthy lifestyle not only creates a healthier body, but also mind.
My word for the year is Thrive and I plan to start from the ground up. By taking care of myself first before I branch out and attempt to tackle other areas in life.
This January I will be challenging my lifestyle with daily yoga and a health challenge.
