Seattle Pacific University has a field station located on Blakely Island in the San Juans. They offer several summer courses for undergraduate students. Last summer I took courses in marine ecology, forest ecology, and environmental physiology. They also offer many courses for non-science majors, such as marine biology and astronomy!
The atmosphere here is incredible! Each class is 2 weeks long, with a very small class size. The 2 week long intense study immerses you into the material. While taking marine ecology, our days were often governed by the tides. We worked so many hours, when I was asleep I would often dream about combing the beach for shore crabs.
Each day you get to eat family style with your classmates and professors. There is nothing better than having so much time to get to know the people in your class. Blakely is where I made close friends with the other students in my major. To any SPU student who has the opportunity to take a class at the field station, you will love it! For anyone who already has, I hope you can say the same thing!
